It is the Computer Vision Laboratory – CVL - that will participate in the project at ETH, one of the leading technical universities in Europe (about 10 Nobel prizes so far). The CVL is one of the ``Institutes’’ of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, D-ITET (basically what would typically be called the EE department). The group comprises three professors (Luc Van Gool – full professor, Ender Konukoglu – tenure track assistant professor, and Orçun Göksel – non-tenure track assistant professor, prof. Szekely is retired by now), 13 postdocs and about 30 PhD students. The lab mainly focuses on image analysis, medical and otherwise. Moreover, there is an important activity in the use of ultrasound technology for medicine. Prof. Van Gool will take part with his team. They focus on tracking and gesture analysis, object recognition and image-based retrieval, texture analysis and synthesis, and 3D modeling. The team has been involved in several European projects already (EurEyeCase and Replicate being the most recent examples, with Replicate ongoing for less than 1 year still). It also just finished an ERC Advanced Grant (VarCity) on the 3D modelling of cities and the dynamics therein. Prof. Van Gool and his team have created several spin-off companies already, some of which have been acquired (by e.g. Apple, Esri, Qualcomm).
